The official roster should be used for local custody. It is not the same as SCDC's state-prison locator, the federal Bureau of Prisons locator, or VINE custody notification. It also is not a complete court file. Charges listed in a booking result should be compared with the Charleston County court charge record and, when the case has moved forward, the full criminal case record.

Charleston County Detention Center
The Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center is the county jail facility documented in the research. It was originally built in 1966 and expanded several times. A four-story addition completed in 1994 raised capacity to 661. Two modular units added in 2007 raised capacity to 789. A third expansion completed in May 2010 increased capacity to 1,917. In 2020, two modular units and the Work Camp were removed, lowering population capacity by 224. The current stated capacity in the research is 1,693.
The facility consists of four buildings. Tower A includes training space, staff areas, inmate library, logistics, and eight housing units. Towers B and C include administrative offices, a control center, kitchen, laundry, staff dining, medical department, lobby, visitation area, 21 direct-supervision units, and a DHEC-licensed infirmary. A Juvenile Detention Facility is nearby off campus. The facility is monitored by more than 700 cameras, and main entrance security includes a metal detector and bag scanning.

Charleston County Visitation Schedule
Charleston County uses video visitation to reduce contraband introduction and inmate movement. An inmate must be incarcerated at least 72 hours before receiving a visit. Visitors set up accounts through Securus. Personal visitation is currently online only except for attorneys, and an inmate may refuse a visit. Out-of-state visitors with out-of-state picture ID may receive one unscheduled visit if space is available.

Visitors suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs will not be allowed to visit. Visitors must be at least 17 years old or accompanied by a parent or guardian to schedule online visits. Disruptive conduct can cancel a visit, and clothing must meet detention center standards.
Charleston County Inmate Mail and Money
The detention center is cashless, and inmates cannot possess U.S. currency. Each inmate has an account for commissary purchases and uses an inmate number from the armband plus birth date at the housing-unit kiosk. The maximum commissary spending amount in the research is $100 per week. Deposits can be made at the lobby kiosk, by U.S. Mail money order, or online at TouchPayOnline.com using Site #229405. For Canteen availability, deposits must be made before 8:00AM Monday.
Money orders must be payable to Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center, with the inmate's name and number only on the memo line. Altered or improper money orders are not accepted. Care packages use Shop.ICareGifts.com, and phone or tablet deposits use Securus. After booking, inmates can make a free local call to notify family, friends, or counsel; later calls are collect calls. Securus customer service is 800-844-6591.
Personal mail changed after 5/1/2023 and is no longer accepted directly by Charleston County Detention Center. Personal mail should use the format: incarcerated individual and ID number, Charleston, SC County Jail, C/O Securus Digital Mail Center, PO Box 20207, Tampa, FL 33622. Mail is scanned and available on tablets, and physical mail is destroyed 60 days after upload. Packages and certified mail are returned to sender.
Note: Money orders for inmate funds still mail directly to 3841 Leeds Avenue, while personal mail routes through Securus Digital Mail.
SCDC BOP and VINE Differences
Charleston County inmate search is the county-jail tool. South Carolina Department of Corrections inmate search is for sentenced state-prison inmates, not pretrial county jail detainees. SCDC also lists a toll-free inmate information line at 1-866-727-2846 and directs error reports to Ombudsman@doc.sc.gov. If a person was transferred from Charleston County to state custody, SCDC is the more likely source.

Apps and Record Requests
The Charleston Co Sheriffs Office app is listed on Apple and Google Play. The store descriptions say residents can report crimes, submit tips, use interactive features, and receive public safety news and information. The research does not confirm an app-only inmate lookup, so the official web roster remains the inmate-search source. The app still matters for tips, news, and agency contact.
The Sheriff's Office pages also link FOIA and public incident-reporting channels. Use a records request for booking or public-record materials not shown online, subject to exemptions and active-investigation limits. Medical, security, juvenile, and confidential details should not be expected in a public response.
